PGY2 Ambulatory Care Pharmacy Residency

Program Director: Douglas F. Covey, Pharm.D., CDE, FCCP, MHA

Program Goal: Resident will learn the clinical pharmacist’s role in providing direct patient care in general and advanced specialty practice settings.

Core Areas of Practice

• Primary Care and Internal Medicine
  • Provide care through disease state management consults (hypertension, diabetes, lipids, etc.)
  • Answer drug information questions
  • Educate patients (MDIs, HBGM, etc.)
  • Telephone triage
• Specialty Clinics
  • Anticoagulation, diabetes, amiodarone, rheumatology, hepatitis and hepatology, infectious diseases (HIV focus)
• Home Based Primary Care
• Administration (clinical management)
• Patient Education Classes
  • Basic Diabetes, Cardiac Rehab, Smoking Cessation
  • Resident will assist with the ASHP Lipid/CV Risk Traineeship program held in Fall & Spring locally

In addition, all of our inpatient clinical pharmacy specialists have a component of ambulatory care as part of their practice. They provide care in I.D. Clinics, Nephrology Clinic, Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Clinics, Geriatric Clinics, Amiodarone Clinic, Anemia Clinic, and Oncology Clinics.
